Landcare Groups

Landcare is fundamentally a grass roots volunteer movement supported by all three levels of government and the corporate sector in partnership with the community to facilitate  community stewardship of our environment.

Landcarers have a passion for seeing our natural environment managed so that it will be there for future generations to enjoy and from which to benefit. Landcarers come from all walks of life. Most are local residents who are interested in their patch of bush, creek or foreshore. These committed and dedicated volunteers usually form groups that identify with projects that are local to their area. This promotes and encourages the local community to build social capital, develop an awareness of environmental issues and to value their community’s natural assets.

Lake Macquarie Landcare Groups seek to restore, rehabilitate and conserve the natural environment in bushland, parks, foreshores, estuaries, wetlands, creeks, and coastal areas on Council land, Crown land, and private land of high conservation significance.

This section shows the locations of over 200 Lake Macquarie Landcare Groups. The Landcare groups have been divided into the following site type classifications according to the site’s highest priority:

These classifications are not comprehensive as many Landcare Groups work on a range of these classifications. Each of the above classifications is represented by detailed case studies of two Lake Macquarie Landcare Groups, followed by a table of information for the remaining Landcare Groups in each classification.

The management targets listed under “NRM Issues Being Addressed” refer to the targets listed in the Hunter Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority’s Catchment Action Plan. Landcare Groups are also addressing Lake Macquarie City Council’s environmental aims and objectives, and the Federal Government’s recently announced “Caring For Our Country” priorities.
