Support Structures

Landcare in Lake Macquarie is managed through a series of structures that have been developed over many years to ensure that Landcare is a positive experience for all concerned. These support structures are:

The Landcare Support Team

Council employs the Landcare Coordinator and Administration Officer, and contracts the Landcare Vegetation Officer, Communications and Grants Officers, and Administration Support Officers through LMLN Inc.

Team Leader Training

To ensure that Landcare sites are safe workplaces and that Landcare works are appropriate, all Landcare groups must have at least one qualified Team Leader. Training is delivered on the 2nd last Saturday of each month (or otherwise by appointment) and usually at the LRO.

Volunteer Insurance

LMCC provides insurance cover for all registered Landcare groups undertaking approved activities on land that is owned and/or managed by Council. Groups working on land NOT owned or managed by Council can be covered by the LMLN Inc. insurance.

Funds Management

LMCC provides funds management for approved Landcare projects funded by other Government grants. This structure represents a significant in-kind contribution to the project and greatly assists in the financial and project management of the grant.

Professional Support Teams

Landcare groups can also receive support from Council funded “Green Teams” contracted through the LRO, and managed by LMLN Inc, for works on new, difficult, sensitive projects, and/or where the task is beyond the safe capacity of the group.

Program Volunteers

Landcare is a volunteer movement. People volunteer for many different reasons. Some volunteer to fulfil obligations. All are welcome as Landcarers. All contribute to the significant efforts of the Lake Macquarie Landcare community, through their support of the Landcare Resource Office, the support of the City’s Landcare groups as members of the Green Team, through the very successful Galgabba and Cam’s Wharf projects, or on a number of other Landcare projects across the city.

Networking

Landcare groups, made up of local volunteers with the desire to give their time and efforts to rehabilitate and protect the natural assets of their community are the core of Landcare in Lake Macquarie. Sometimes, individual groups band together to form Networks to share their experiences and resources and to promote the Landcare ethic.

The great majority of Landcare groups in Lake Macquarie are working on land that is owned by the City or land that is owned by the Crown and managed by Council. Some sites are on private land, and some projects are on Hunter Water land. Although Council funds can only be spent on land under Council management, all Landcare groups in this city have benefited from the structures developed to empower community participation in natural resource management.
