There was much to celebrate at the annual Environmental Excellence in Landcare Awards on Friday 24 November.
More than 70 local Landcarers attended the award presentation held at the Landcare Resource Centre in Booragul, celebrating the accomplishments of all local Landcarers throughout 2017. Mayor Kay Fraser presented the awards alongside State Members Greg Piper and Jodie Harrison, and Federal Member Joel Fitzgibbon.
Awards were presented for significant environmental efforts from Lake Macquarie Landcare groups and individuals, with award categories in the areas of newcomer and longstanding groups, community education, Landcare achievers, local legend and ten years’ service.
Redhead Bluff Landcarer, Brian Hilton, was recently recognised for his amazing efforts in coastal restoration at the NSW Coastal Management Awards. Brian received a Community Involvement Award in recognition of his volunteer work over the last 40 years restoring the beautiful Redhead coastline.
Hunter Region Landcare Network Chair, John Hughson, presented the Soaring with Eagles award to Lakeside Drive Landcarer, Garry Stewart. The award represents the pinnacle of the Lake Macquarie Environmental Excellence in Landcare awards, being awarded to an individual who has achieved all of the previous awards and who makes a regionally significant contribution to Landcare.
